Acne Program Coaching & Treatment Guide

As you go through your process of achieving clear skin of your face and/or body and you are wanting optimum results, it is recommended to receive biweekly office treatments. The reason for getting treatments is seven-fold:

1. To allow us to monitor your progress and make changes to your home-care as needed.

2. For exfoliating the skin so that home-care product can penetrate the pore more easily.

3. To lighten dark spots (if you have them) that are caused by acne lesions.

4. For hydrating the skin so that the skin is receptive to your home-care regimen. The products also tend to dry out the skin somewhat as you are getting used to them.

5. For extracting existing acne impactions.

6. For killing acne bacteria inside the pore.

7. For helping minimize any scarring caused by acne lesions.

Each acne treatment has a specific focus for what the skin needs at the time of treatment. Sometimes the skin will need more hydration, other times it will need more anti-bacterial and/or anti-inflammatory action.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can you help me if I live long distance?

We offer special long distance acne management programs for out of the area clients.

What is acne defined?

Acne vulgaris is a common disorder of the skin. Our skin is in a constant cycle of renewal growing new cells and shedding the old ones occuring not only on the surface of the skin but also inside each pore. Acneic skins have hyper keratosis which causes new skin cells to develop faster than they can shed the dead ones.

At least 85% of teens experience acne because of androgen hormones which are a key factor causing the dead skin cells inside the pores to become sticky and sluggish. When mixed with the skin's sebum(oil), a waxy plug forms reducing the amount of oxygen circulating inside the pore enabling bacteria to grow and thus the immune system responds by sending white blood cells over to the pores to kill the bacteria.

This process is what causes the pores to become inflamed, sore, and filled with pus. This is "inflamed acne." For some people, their acne may never progress to the inflamed stage. Instead, they suffer from chronic clogged pores, which results in a bumpy textured and congested skin or “non-inflamed acne”. It is possible to suffer from both types of acne. Besides hormones another common factor of acne is cosmetics or skin care products containing pore clogging ingredients.

Is it okay if I’m a picker?

If you pick your acne lesions, you will be left with scars, brown spots and pit marks. Also, when you pick, you run the risk of spreading the bacteria into the surrounding pores and causing more blemishes and scaring. Allow your professional esthetician who is skilled and specifically trained to safely perform your extractions.

If a doctor can't clear me, how is your program effective?

Most dermatologists or doctors will approach acne with a short ten minute office visit and prescribe prescriptions that do not produce any lasting results and can negatively influence your health. In my esthetic practice, it is a more personal service, clients have easier access to support and home care adjustments and prescriptions are not an answer in most cases.

We treat acne holistically taking many variables into consideration like a complete home-care regimen and client's lifestyle instead of being sent home with a little tube of cream and without all the bases covered.

Why have I developed adult acne?

It is believed that the androgen hormones are responsible for causing the skin cells inside the pore to become sticky. There is the natural aging process and as women age the estrogen levels decline and the androgen hormones become more dominant.

Birth control pills can be a culprit as well. Some birth control pills are lower in estrogen and higher in the androgen hormones. If you are not sure about the type of birth control pill you use, consult with your doctor. Certain foods may also contribute to onset adult acne.

What can I expect from my initial consultation?

When you come in for your acne consultation, important background information will be collected and a skin analysis will be performed. This will help to identify your specific type of acne and prescribe an appropriate patient specific treatment protocol and home care regimen. We will go over lifestyle, diet and which skin care ingredients to avoid in order to maintain your skin so it stays clear.

What makes our program successful?

You and I will work as a team over the course of your treatments. Staying in contact with us as you go through the process is key. As your skin adjusts to the products, we may need to change the methods of your applications while slowly increasing the strengths of your acne regimen.

You will become more educated in the causes of acne and the best methods of home care for your specific type of acne. The more committed and patients are about their acne management, the more successful they are at managing it.

When will I begin to see results?

The average client may see results within the first two weeks, but it may take from 3 to 4 months to become completely clear. For some it may be sooner and for more stubborn acne, it may take a little longer.
